We are happy to announce that on Monday 8/6 our collegue Nan Li defended her PhD thesis titled “Understanding, Structuring, and Fairly Allocating Consequential Resources in High-Stakes Information Retrieval”.

Nan Li began her doctoral studies in Computer Science at IDLab, Ghent University, in December 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Tijl De Bie and Prof. Jefrey Lijffijt. Her doctoral research focused on responsible information retrieval in high-stakes settings. During her doctoral studies, she authored seven first authored peer-reviewed publications, including three journal articles and four conference papers. One additional manuscript is currently under review. Her work on fairness in e-recruitment recommendation received the Women in RecSys Journal Paper of the Year Award in 2025.
The work was funded by Research Foundation Flanders - FWO and Vlaams AI Onderzoeksprogramma / Flanders AI Research Program.
